Winter’s Tale

A great city is nothing more than a portrait of itself, and yet when all is said and done, its arsenals of scenes and images are part of a deeply moving plan. As a book in which to read this plan, New York is unsurpassed. For the whole world has poured its heart into the city by the Palisades, and made it far better than it ever had any right to be.

  1. Aha. Forgot about him. I interviewed this guy for BookPage or Publishers Weekly some years ago on the publication of his A Soldier of the Great War (I think that was the title). What a story-teller. He fabricated a wild chronology of his own life during the interview and I swallowed it whole until finally it seemed just too incredible and I asked him if all of it was true. At which he paused, laughed and said simply “No!” Funny
